TechXtend's History

1982

Beginnings: A reseller of educational software — a Division of Voyager Software Corporation.

Programmer's Paradise is incorporated in 1982 as Voyager Software Corporation and starts out as a distributor and reseller of educational software. In 1988, a new president and chief executive officer, Roger Paradis takes over the company and begins a strategy of growth.

Programmer's Paradise (as Voyager Software) acquires Corsoft, a value-added software reseller that boasts major customers such as AT&T and Bell Labs.

The Programmer's Paradise reseller business grows steadily in the early 1990s — dedicated to the software needs of corporate technology professionals. From 1992 to 1994, what is soon to become Programmer's Paradise, expands into Europe through acquisitions in Italy, Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom.

1995

We become Programmer's Paradise and make an IPO. Launch of programmersparadise.com

Programmer's ParadiseIn May 1995, Voyager changes its name to Programmer's Paradise Inc. and in July 1995, makes an initial public offering (IPO), listing on NASDAQ.

The newly named Programmer's Paradise launches its first web site. Although the general public had not yet embraced the Internet in mass numbers, the target market for Programmer's Paradise is early adopters of new technology, so an Internet presence is important to the company's growth strategy.

Initially, programmersparadise.com is simply an online catalog of software developer and productivity tools. This is supplemented in May 1996 with an e-commerce capability, so customers can actually purchase products on line. Later in the summer of that year, a software-downloading option is added, so customers can purchase their products and have them delivered directly and electronically.

A second site, Programmer's SuperShop, is added in July 1996 after Programmer's Paradise acquires its chief U.S. catalog competitor, The Software Developer's Company, Inc., known for its catalog The Programmer's Supershop. Programmer's Paradise also launches the Internet Paradise print catalog, geared toward Internet developers.

Riding The CrestThe company introduces the "Riding the Crest®" awards to recognize the products that our customers select most often.

Internationally Programmer's Paradise continues to expand — in 1995 in the U.K. and France, and in 1997 by acquisitions in Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Canada.

1998

A New CEO expands Programmer's Paradise Internet business

In July 1998, after ten years at the helm, Roger Paradis resigns from the Programmer's Paradise Inc. parent company and is replaced as CEO & Chairman, by William H. Willett.

New CEO Willett's strategy focuses on building the Programmer's Paradise Internet business in the United States and Canada. While the Programmer's Paradise print catalog remains a primary driver of traffic to the company's call center, it now becomes an important means of promoting the Programmer's Paradise web presence.

2000

The New Millennium: Virtualization Changes the World of IT

In 2000, Programmer's Paradise exits the European market.

In the early 2000s, a new software vendor, VMware, begins to make waves with their virtualization technology. Programmer's Paradise is one of the early reseller champions of VMware. In 2002, VMware's VMware Workstation product wins the Programmer's Paradise Riding the Crest Award as best-selling product for 2001. This proves to be the first of many such awards for soon-to-be industry giant VMware.
